Maker Interview

Hi Christian, Welcome to the Big Bang Launch Newsletter. Could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you started working at Litespace?

I graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2018 and started working as a financial analyst. I took on a new challenge at canopy as a manager in business intelligence.

However, I knew long term I always wanted to get back into SaaS. Litespace co-founder, Jack, who was a close friend at the university reached out to me one day to join the team & lead their sales department. I took it up and the rest is history.

Why did you decide to launch Litespace on Product Hunt? What were your goals for the launch?

Our goal was to just get as much feedback as possible and create some brand awareness.

At what phase did you decide to launch the PH?

We launched on Product Hunt while building the MVP. We were close to our product launch, so we wanted to get immediate feedback from Product Hunt.

When did you start planning for the launch?

We started planning 1 month before the launch.

  1. We began working on a strategy for launching on product hunt ( We analysed what the other makers did to succeed).
  2. Then we drafted up our product hunt content copy, graphics, and demo video. We wanted to get onto the launching soon page with a strong presentation.
  3. Our team then sent out launch news to the pre-existing list of followers of our product.


Why did you choose to launch on a Thursday on Product Hunt? Any strategy behind it?

We wanted to launch in February. We didn’t want to do Feb 1 as we thought that day might be very competitive, so ended up picking Feb 2 which is a Thursday.

We didn’t want to do it on the weekend as we cared about feedback + awareness more than winning the product of the day.

We noticed that your team weren’t very active on social media. How did you create buzz for your launch & what were the top traffic sources that got you the most upvotes on PH?

Slack communities were our top traffic source for promoting our launch. We had a decent amount of people on our slack channel, so that was an easy way to promote and pick up votes.

Litespace ranked #2 on Product Hunt when you launched but managed to break the #1 position in the final few hours. Can you share what steps you took to achieve it?

I knew we were close to our competitor and had the chance to get #1. A lot of the people I had messaged said they would give us a vote after their work hours. So when their upvotes started coming in, that gave us a bump.

So when the gap between #1 started getting lesser, I also called some of my family to walk them through the voting. In the end, I was genuinely surprised by the final results but proud of my team and their handwork.

Could you share some numbers from your Product Hunt launch?

  1. Website visits – +400% increase in traffic
  2. Signups – 70

What were the biggest challenges you faced while launching the Product Hunt? And how did you overcome them?

  1. Our first big challenge was making sure that our website messaging was clear and easily delivered to our users. So we did many edits to the website content and got feedback before the launch.
  2. The second challenge was the demo video. The demo video probably took me 20 times to get it right but it was worth it.

What are the 3 advice you would give to creators who’re launching on Product Hunt?

  1. Make sure your content is concise and clear.
  2. Make a demo/youtube video that talks about your product.
  3. Spend time on graphics. The majority of the comments we received touched on how great our product & website design were. So I think it was a key piece in pulling people to our page.
